Background & Context

Following our recent call, I conducted market research into commercially available parking kiosk solutions. The only publicly listed price found was from Parking BOXX — their Smart Parking Meter (Canada) is listed at $10,310 CAD per unit as a base price, before any add-ons such as bill/coin acceptance (+$3,500–$5,000), modem systems (+$1,295), or rate signs (+$1,500). Their kiosk management software carries an additional monthly fee of $79–$129/month on top of the hardware cost.

The screenshot below was captured directly from their Canadian store listing and is included here for reference.

A custom-built solution provides the same core functionality at a fraction of the hardware cost. Software and hosting remain managed and maintained by the provider, giving the client access to a fully operational system without the overhead of infrastructure ownership.

Criteria Off-the-Shelf (e.g. Parking BOXX) This Proposal
Hardware cost per unit $10,000+ CAD Up to $3,000 CAD
Software & servers Vendor-owned + separate monthly license Provider-managed, included in monthly fee — no separate licensing
Physical hardware ownership Client-owned (after purchase) Client-owned — unit belongs to the client outright
Customization Limited or none Complete — built to your specification
Branding & white-label Not available Included
Section 2

Proposed Scope of Work

The following deliverables are included in this engagement. All items are developed, tested, and deployed as part of the fixed one-time software fee.

Section 3

Hardware Solution

Each kiosk is assembled in-house using proven commercial-grade components. The enclosure is constructed from durable plastic or metal and engineered to operate reliably in outdoor environments, including exposure to weather, UV, and general wear.

Section 4

Cost Breakdown

All prices are in Canadian dollars (CAD). The one-time software fee covers everything listed in Section 2. Ongoing costs are structured per active location, keeping pricing proportional to your operational scale.

One-Time

Software Development

$1,500 CAD

One-time build fee covering all features in Section 2. The software and infrastructure remain the property of the provider and are licensed to the client for the duration of the service agreement.

Per Location / Month

Maintenance & Hosting

$150 CAD/loc

Covers hosting, updates, bug fixes, support, and all SMS & email messaging costs — carrier rates for transactional messaging are significant and are absorbed into this fee.

Per Unit

Custom Kiosk Hardware

$3,000 CAD

All-in build cost per unit — components, assembly, enclosure, and configuration. No hidden markups.

Note on the monthly fee: The $150 CAD/month per location rate is structured to cover the real cost of SMS and transactional email delivery, which carriers bill per message and accumulate quickly at volume. This provides a single, predictable monthly figure per site inclusive of all messaging, hosting, and maintenance.
Compared to the publicly listed Parking BOXX price of $10,310 CAD per unit (base, before add-ons), this solution represents a hardware saving of over $7,300 CAD per unit. Software and hosting are fully managed by the provider — the client has no infrastructure to maintain and no separate licensing fees to negotiate.
Section 5

Full production deployment, client walkthrough, and documentation package delivered on the agreed deadline.

Section 6

Service Terms & Ownership

The following terms govern the ownership and use of software, infrastructure, and hardware as part of this engagement. These terms are intended to be incorporated into the formal service agreement signed prior to project commencement.

Physical Kiosk Hardware
Each kiosk unit, once delivered and paid for in full, is the sole property of the client. Hardware ownership is unconditional and not affected by the status of the service agreement.
Servers & Infrastructure
All hosting infrastructure, servers, and cloud services are provisioned, managed, and owned by the provider. The client does not hold accounts, credentials, or ownership of any server resources.
Monthly Service Fee
The $150 CAD/month per location fee constitutes payment for continued access to the platform, hosting, messaging services, maintenance, and support. Failure to maintain payments may result in suspension of service access.
